In this year, even though we are still experiencing COVID-19 pandemic and all classes has to be done online, we had quite nice outcomes again from our OWM course.
Organic Waste Management course is designed to provide students with knowledge of organic wastes generation and possibilities of its processing (with a particular focus on tropical and subtropical regions). Two main processing methods, composting and anaerobic digestion are discussed in the connection with specific tropical and/or developing country conditions. The tutorials are designed to provide students with basic practical methods for estimation of the right composition of feedstocks, process evaluation and final product quality.
Aside of several individual tasks done by students, lectures and seminars, there were again Group projects, which are designed to come up and propose new solutions as well as present new ideas and ideally transform them into practice.
This year, among the outcomes, were:
- Solar Bio-Sales Container “Producing Energy While Reducing and Treating Waste”
- 80 feet prototype container processing market waste and generating biogas
- Action plan for city regarding food waste management
- Action plan for city of Sarajevo regarding food waste management
- Business proposal: Composting for a cause
- Project that can instigate positive change for the society and environment in the city of Prague
- Antelope Skin - Valorisation of Waste from Faculty Antelope Farm
- Business plan for use of antelope skin (which is not being used) for further utilization
Some the projects are already in the follow-up phase and looking for further funding.
Furthermore, some of the students also helped to set up vermicomposter at our faculty as well as had the opportunity to get familiar with unique electric composters.
