Procedures for Habilitation and Professorships

Habilitation and procedures for granting of professorships at the FTA follows the provisions of the Higher Education Act no. 111/1998 Coll., and are as laid out in the document "Guidelines for habilitation and procedures for the granting of professorships applicable to proceedings initiated after 1.10.2013", and in the Decision of the Dean of the FTA Ref. 3/2014.

Under the Act cited above, habilitation shall entail the verification of scientific expertise and of competence as a teacher, while procedures for the granting of a professorship require the educational and scientific qualifications of a candidate who is a distinguished and recognized scientific personality in their field.

Under the terms of its accreditation, the FTA is authorized to carry out procedures for habilitation and the granting of professorships in "Tropical Agriculture and Ecology".

Habilitation Procedures

Habilitation is initiated at the request of the applicant, which shall be submitted to the Dean. Assuming the provision of all necessary documents referred to in the regulations cited above and meeting the conditions of accreditation for the particular field of the habilitation, the Dean submits the request to the Academic Council of the Faculty together with a proposed list of a five-member Habilitation Committee; the Chair of the Committee must be a professor and at least three members must be experts in workplaces other than at CZU.

The Habilitation Committee, as approved by the Academic Council, shall appoint three Reviewers of the Habilitation Thesis. Based on the opinions of these Reviewers, the Habilitation Committee shall assess the level of the Habilitation Thesis and the eligibility of the candidate.

The proposal, whether or not the candidate is to be appointed Associate Professor (“Docent”), is presented to the Academic Council of the FTA, which shall, at a public meeting, hear the defense of the Habilitation Thesis and the Habilitation Lecture of the candidate and then by means of a secret ballot decide on the acceptance or rejection of the candidate.

Any request for appointment as Associate Professor (“Docent”) shall be passed by the Scientific Council to the Rector. If the Rector agrees with the request, he appoints the candidate as Associate Professor (“Docent”).

Procedures for the Granting of a Professorship

The procedure for the granting of a professorship is initiated at the request of the applicant, which is supported by at least two submissions of professors in the same or a related field or by the Dean and/or Rector, submitted to the Academic Council of the FTA. This procedure may be initiated on its own initiative by the Academic Council.

At the request of the Dean, the Academic Council of the FTA shall approve a five-member Evaluation Committee composed of professors, Associate Professors (“Docents”) and other important representatives in the field. The Chair must be a professor and at least three members must be from other institutions than the CZU Prague.

The Evaluation Committee shall present the results of its deliberations to the Academic Council, who shall then invite the applicant to a meeting to give a public lecture to present the concept of some scientific and educational work in the field. After the public lecture, the Council shall decide by secret ballot whether the candidate is to be granted the professorship.

The proposal is then submitted to the Academic Council of the University, after which the candidate again delivers his or her lecture, and then in a secret ballot the Academic Council of the University votes on agreement or disagreement with the granting of the title of professor.

The professor is appointed by the President of the Czech Republic on the recommendation of the Rector of the University through the Minister of Education, Youth and Sports.

Record of fulfillment of qualification criteria
List of publications and other results (broken down by category of the qualification criteria), including citations of all publications
All relevant documents supporting and showing compliance with the criteria:

Documents proving teaching experience
Evidence of previous qualifications
Evidence of defended dissertations and theses
Evidence of completed internships
Evidence of completed supervised PhD students
Project documents (extracts from CEP)
Evidence of membership in professional and Academic Councils and academic societies
Documents certifying the position of expert in international organizations, speakerships, membership of the editorial boards of professional/international journals
List the five most important works
Reprints of publications listed in the works of the candidate
Letters of Recommendation (to the appointing authority)
Habilitation Thesis - 4 x bundled copy (only in the case of Habilitation)

A file containing a brief professional biography, details of specialization and a table of the criteria fulfilled - max. 4 A4 pages.

If the proposal does not have all the necessary requirements and the candidate fails to correct the defects within a reasonable time, the Dean or the Rector may terminate the procedure.
