Kseniia Paramonova presenting at ELLS Scientific Student Conference 2020 - First Online Edition
An alumna from Biogas Research Team presented her scientific findings at the traditional November ELLS conference!
First Online Edition of the ELLS Scientific Student Conference 2020 was organized by the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) in Vienna, Austria on the 20th and 21st of November 2020. Detailed information is available on the website of the conference.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the conference was reorganized. For the first time in the history of the ELLS network, this conference took place online. Students, university staff, and management gathered virtually to exchange, connect, and discuss - like in real life but using a web-camera and microphone. The ELLS conference 2020 platform was prepared in the form of the online campus of BOKU (Pic. 1) and it was accessible via the internet browser of computer as well as via mobile phone. The online meetings like the plenary sessions, workshops, presentations, and discussion rounds were realized via the conferencing platform Zoom.
“The aim of this conference was to encourage students within the field of Life Sciences to engage with one another, exchange ideas, and discuss their own research related to the topic ‘The World of Tomorrow – A Green and Sustainable Society’ “ says the organizers.
Four subthemes of the conference are listed below:
- Green innovation and technology
- The circular and bio-based economy
- Rural and urban development for thriving communities
- Food and health for the next generation
The target audience of the ELLS Scientific Student Conference 2020 included BSc, MSc, and first-year Ph.D. students of universities affiliated to the ELLS network.
This year in the subtheme Rural and urban development for thriving communities it was presented a contribution entitled “The Fate of Abandoned Small-Scale Biogas Plants – Case of Vietnam” authored by Kseniia Paramonova, Hynek Roubík, and Jana Mazancová. Screenshots of poster at the virtual exhibition where the posters were showcased can be found below (Pic.2).
The book of abstracts with the complete overview is available HERE. Let’s get inspired by the research results of colleagues!
Although the main events of the conference were held on 20th and 21st of November 2020, the conference platform was opened until the 10th of December 2020 for registered participants.
The ELLS Conference 2020 offered also a wide array of activities for participants to discuss, network and exchange online. Programme of the conference included several additional side events and social activities that foster networking and exchange amongst students and researchers refined the event (such as Online Campus Tour, Soft Skill Trainings, ELLS Café, online Wake Up Session/ Wake Up Yoga etc.). The whole conference was covered on BOKU’s Instagram account, with interesting interviews and fun quizzes (@boku.vienna).
You can also have a look at the graphical presentation of the conference programme (so-called Online Graphic Recording) to find out the highlights (Pic. 3).
The conference was fully technically supported by organizers with the guidelines, tutorials on how to use the different tools (that were used during the conference), and technical support team (via e-mail, phone, or talking with one of the support members per chat or video conference). As it was a new format for the conference, in order to avoid potential technical difficulties, organizers asked also participants to provide a PowerPoint recording of pitch - slides, and narration (as backup recording which would be then shown in case internet connection was lost). Recordings were also made available to watch in the virtual poster exhibition on the platform and they were made visible to all attendees of the conference.
The virtual contribution of young researchers and successful organization by BOKU made the First Online Edition of the ELLS 2020 Scientific Student Conference an event to remember!
The ELLS Conference 2021 entitled Green (r)evolution: from molecules to ecosystems will take place on 19-20 November 2021 and will be organized by Warsaw University of Life Sciences, Poland.
Members of the Biogas Research Team – keep up the good job in presenting your scientific findings!
